Cultural confidence and the Western Man
Posted by Nate under Nate
I read an essay the other day written by Mark Steyn that piqued my interest. Today, TigerHawk has clipped a piece of that essay and added some commentary, referencing, in particular, a term Steyn used - “cultural confidence”. This link will take you to TigerHawk’s entry, as well as provide a link back to Steyn’s original piece at JWR. I link to TigerHawk because my commentary this morning is intended to further his own. Quoth the Hawk:
“Clearly, there are many many people in the West who have lost their cultural confidence. We’ve been walking on eggshells for years now, and to what effect? The Islamists don’t seem to have any problems imposing their values on us when given the opportunity. Is cultural confidence lost to the West, and if not, what will it take to bring it back? Four years ago I would have predicted that we had begun a reversal of sorts, but the West’s collective lack of spine in defending our own cherished values of free expression during the cartoon kerfuffle make me wonder whether, as a society, we’ve passed the point of no return.
I can only say: Of course we have. Then again, I’m a pessimist by nature.
Let’s look at this logically.
The America we know was not built by Native Americans. They were subjugated, annihilated and marginalized.
It was not built by Mexicans. We routed their army and kicked them off “our” land (more on this in a post later today).
It was not built by Africans. It may have been built in some part on the backs of Africans, but that isn’t what I’m really talking about, here. I speak not of concrete and steel; I speak of the principles, foundation and laws that have separated America from other countries throughout history. I speak of the values and traditions that are being eroded, day by day.
America - the America we all know - was built by white Christians. And it was the building of this nation, and the “crimes” we perpetrated to found and develop this country, that have robbed us of our “cultural confidence” today.
We committed what by today’s standards would be called a genocide against the Native Americans (even attacking them with biological weapons, according to some historians). We conquered another country’s sovereign territory and incorporated it into our own borders (much as Israel is vilified for today). We committed an enormous historical sin with our enslavement of Africans for two hundred years. Now, with Political Correctness and Moral Relativism all the rage among political and social circles in the US, these past “crimes” have come back to bite white Christians in their collective asses.
“White guilt” over these historical issues have led to our politicians and large, liberal segments of our society bending over backwards to appease and accomodate two of these three groups to try to soothe our collective consciences. It is as if the wrongs of past centuries have all been called to account now, and we’re tripping over ourselves in our haste to somehow “correct” them more than a century after the fact.
We have out-of-control immigration, and, maybe, reconquista. We have Affirmative Action legislation and growing talk of reparations.
The Native Americans just got casinos. Sort of a shitty deal, in retrospect.
White Christians did what was acceptable at the time to create a great, united country of… white Christians. Today, the tradeoff is that the white Christian has become a virtual pariah within the country he founded. Resist unchecked immigration, and we’re xenophobic white conquistadors. Resist reparations, and we’re racist slaveowners. Buttressing these claims are worthless politicos like Hillary Clinton, taking any plantationesque swipes they can to ingratiate themselves to minority voters. Against the rising influnece of PC, we have quailed. Only, hiding our heads under the blankets hasn’t made this boogeyman go away.
America has sold its soul to Political Correctness, and Political Correctness states that the white American must atone for his crimes against humanity. Apparently, that means allowing minority criminals run rampant over the rule of law, but hey - that’s a small price to pay for going to bed with a clear conscience tonight. This is the tide, and we have lost the collective will to resist it.
At least, that’s my racist, xenophobic take on it. I’ll post some more when I get back from the slave market. Two-for-one today!
